Do you know what's kinda funny? I, too, have forgotten long division, but I still remember not only where the whistle was in Mario Bros. 3, but I can reimagine where every goomba, every pipe, and every secret is in my mind.

Talk about hitting the nail on the head. I don't think anyone could have said that better. I agree that a lack of motivation doesn't arise innately, but from the environment. People who have to work or take care of family (like you pointed out) cannot possibly have the same mind-frame as those who can focus more on their future/goals.

I also found the article a bit confusing. I was on track until about halfway through. The part that I found particularly difficult was "[f]inally, we can envision other diagrams/models emerging as artists go deeper into the psychological and neurological depths in search of expressions for various thought processes and manifestations of consciousness" (468). I just feel like I am missing a deeper point in this article. It will be interesting to hear everyone's reactions to the article when we discuss it in class.

I think you're right. Can you write some more about what a "real way" might look like? You've already begun to sketch out some ideas--keep going and see what comes out.

Two words: Virtual Reality. I have such a huge belief in the potential of this technology. Being able not only to see/hear what you and others create, you could also touch, taste, and smell it. Words (and whatever thoughts you have) can exist in entirely different forms.

Yeah, that was definitely a part of the reading I thought was interesting- Kay & Goldberg's vision that the average computer user would be able to create his/her own programs to accomplish desired tasks. I think it's fair to say that very few of us have any idea how to create our own programs and that we're probably perfectly content using those that others have created. I wonder really how they envisioned this would be possible with just the basic knowledge of a computer that the user would likely have...
